They are having too much fun!

When Marvin began travelling over 14 years ago, it was hard for me to decipher that his trips were anything but work. My belief was that a bunch of guys were hanging out after the gig, eating, having fun and not thinking about the responsibilities of home they left behind. It would really aggravate me when Marvin would call to check on us and all I'd hear in the background are roars of laughter. I'd think call me back when we can chat without the interruption of the guy next to you vying for your attention as I was. He would always tell me, "Honey, these trips aren't fun trips, we're working and are at the venue 16 hours a day." If that wasn't enough, when he got home he slept for most of the day trying to catch up on rest he didn't get while out of town.

It wasn't until I travelled with an artist for a short season that I learned firsthand how long the days are and what goes on. After spending an exhausting day at the venue, merchandising, tearing down and packing up, I realized it wasn't all fun. I enjoyed what I did, as he does, and I used to think that he's travelling and eating on someone elses' dime while doing what he loves. Now I know it's hard work.

Last night he got in from the BMI Luncheon which happens every year the Friday before the Stellar Awards. He's the Music Director. So after 2 days of rehearing all day, playing at the event yesterday afternoon, I'm glad he's home, but guess what he's doing...sleeping and it's 2 pm in the afternoon! I've learned over the years to automatically tack on an extra day to his gigs. It has helped me understand a lot better instead of complaining about him being in the house and not being with us.

  2. Great post from a different paradigm! Being a musician, I only see it from my perspective. Interesting (and helpful) to see it from a partner's point of view. Makes me more aware of my wife's needs.
