Prayer and No Debt

The other day my youngest daughter and I were riding in the car. I try to take those moments to impart words of wisdom to her when we are together. She’s 15 and time is short on how much longer she’ll be with me. Without any premeditation, I told my daughter this. "If you only leave home with two things, learn the importance of having a prayer life. Be able to pray through for yourself. Have a relationship with Jesus. Spend time in His presence." The other take away I want my girls to have is to stay out of debt. Learn the benefits of delayed gratitude. This is something society is oblivious to today.

These are not the only two take things I want my girls to leave with, but they rank at the top of the list. Prayer changes things, people and circumstances. Maintaining an open line of communication with the Father will enable them to receive wisdom in situations where they need guidance. Refusing to become a slave to the lender will enable them always be givers which is the ultimate key to living.

Those are two qualities (among many others) I practice as a musician’s wife. I pray about everything. The music industry is ever evolving and I need to be sensitive to the voice of the Lord and where he is taking Marvin and I.

I am a money conscience person by nature and the industry keeps me on my toes. Although we have ministry jobs with a stable income, Marvin still travels and gets paid per performance. Not being in thousands of dollars in debt helps me sleep at night. It frees us to sow as the Lord leads. We haven’t spent tomorrow’s prosperity today on credit cards. Credit isn’t a bad thing. Only when it is mismanaged and misused does it become a burden.

I believe my girls will be fine when they leave home. Prayer is powerful, and financial freedom is too. I’m grateful to impart these things in their lives now instead of later.
